The great British explorer and travel writer Wilfred Thesiger was interviewed by The Economist in the late '90s, when he was in his late 80s, and one of the things he told the magazine was: "The harder the place, the better the people."

I've been thinking of that observation recently because I've noticed an increased friendliness as the economy worsens.
