cliches

It's amazing what you can get by with on film that no editor would ever allow onto the page.

I finally saw Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris this weekend and found it difficult to be charmed because of the avalanche of cliches. There were cinematic cliches, the hackneyed shots of the Champs-Elysees, but the spoken ones were by far the worst. How could a writer who has appeared in The New Yorker put into the mouth of Modigliani's mistress the words: "I can't decide if Paris is more beautiful by day or by night"?

And this from a man who adores Cole Porter.
