We were having lunch on the balcony when Agnieszka spotted a Muscovy duck sitting in the parking lot three floors below. Hania told her that they're arrogant, not easily intimidated. "When you're walking toward them on the boardwalk," she said, "they wait until you're almost upon them before they move away. And then they do so very reluctantly."

"Well after all," said Agnieszka, "they're Muscovy ducks."
