Yesterday afternoon I drove to Hollywood to watch Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s three-hour epic Never Look Away – sitting alone in an empty theater – and then headed down to Marlins Park, where I spent most of the game – inspired by the movie? – wandering the stadium taking pictures of fans.
I drove down to Miami on Tuesday to attend Seatrade (photos on Instagram) and one of the most interesting people I spoke to was a Miami harbor pilot who told me, if I understood him correctly, that harbor pilots do not actually steer the ships, but give precise verbal instructions to the captains who do.

Sitting at the bar of Doc B’s the other night we got talking to the couple sitting next to us. The man was a doctor, both were from Europe. Conversation turned to the U.S. health care system. “I see things sometimes,” the doctor said with a quiet rage, “that at the end of the day I’m tempted to call the New York Times hotline.”
When Hania wakes me up in the morning, as she does on Tuesdays, she marches into the bedroom singing "Heigh-ho, heigh-ho, it's off to work we go" in Polish.
