The last chapter of my memoir covers my two years as an editorial writer:
“The highlight of every day was getting the next day’s editorial and op-ed pages to proof, because there’d often be a cartoon by Pat Oliphant. Unlike us, Oliphant didn’t take sides; every politician of every stripe was equally despicable in his eyes. His drawings were brilliantly conceived and executed with inspired, unsparing exaggeration. One day I read a profile of him in which the writer arrived at his home just after he’d finished a drawing. The cartoonist, with the gusto that comes from completing a good morning’s work, suggested to the writer that they go out for lunch, lunch being one of his favorite things.”
