The Menu, the new film starring Ralph Fiennes and Anya Taylor-Joy, starts out as a biting social satire, poking fun at rich, pretentious foodies, and sadly descends into an exercise in violence. As I left the theater I wondered if the creator originally presented it as a social satire and was told that he had to add violence to it to get a green light, on the belief that audiences are not satisfied with the deft and the subtle.
