young love

(A short break from my travelogue, before I move on - or, more accurately, head back - to Sweden.)

This weekend on BookTV, Lawrence Wright was interviewed about his new book, The Terror Years. Toward the end of the interview he told about how, as a young man in Dallas without much money, he had once taken a date to the airport. He added, in his defense, that it was then called Love Field. A plane that had recently arrived from Europe sat on the tarmac; Wright and his date climbed the steps and sat down in First Class. The amused stewardesses served them snacks. Later, they climbed the FAA tower, where the air traffic controllers said, "Hey, come on in kids."

Wright acknowledged that there is no going back to those days, but he stressed the importance of not forgetting they existed.
