both sides now

One morning at breakfast in San Miguel the other houseguest, a literary agent, spoke with frustration of one of her consultations. It was with a man who'd written a book about Texas yogis. The agent wondered, to us at least, if he could have found a narrower subject. What a loser, I thought.

One day later I sat in a workshop on creating a platform for your book, and a man in the back raised his hand. He had written a book, he said, on Texas yogis. He had gotten into meditation afer years as an environmental lawyer, handling some of the biggest cases in Texas. He said this not in a boastful way, but as a matter of fact. He was intelligent, mild-mannered, self-assured without being arrogant, and in possession of a sly sense of the ridiculous. He made me curious to read his book.
