two airports

The saying "Toronto is the city Montreal made" - which refers to the large exodus of Anglophones from Quebec's largest city to Ontario's largest city in the 70s and 80s - comes to mind when you fly from Pearson International Airport to Trudeau International Airport.

The former is bright and modern, with soaring ceilings and tastefully designed eateries. The latter is cramped and dark. Its Starbucks, which, for some reason, you have to take a ramp to access, was putting out its lunch options at 2:30.

Before discovering this we went through security, where the abandoned bottles of benighted passengers littered the floor, like leftovers from a rehydration party. (Though one collection contained a shapely bottle of maple syrup.) The officers behind the x-ray machine caught Hania's attention. Retrieving her suitcase, she said with amazement: "They're all speaking Russian."
