Tennis is a game of rules, and one of them, apparently, is that if you win at the U.S. Open you must thank the fans in your post-match interview. Victoria Azarenka did it yesterday evening, despite the fact that the vast majority of the crowd had been pulling for her opponent. And every player addresses the crowd as "you guys," assuming a false familiarity. The hope is that the expressed gratitude, even when unwarranted, will win them over for the next match. Though that is not a given, considering the fact that no two crowds at a tennis match are ever the same. Though at the U.S. Open they are universally needy.
