I finally read the John McPhee essay on reporting and was amused by the story he told of the man he once interviewed who used the word "bummer" so often that, when he wrote the story, McPhee took out two-thirds of the "bummers." After the story appeared, people told McPhee that nobody uses the word "bummer" that often.
