a night in Russia

Wednesday night I went to Cinema Paradiso to see the Russian film The Geographer Drank His Globe Away. In the lobby I found Kavita, the volunteer who'd sold me the ticket a week ago. I'd given her a copy of the article I wrote about Cinema Paradiso, and she had told me about Joy's Roti Delight in Lauderhill.

"Have you read my article yet?" I asked her.

"No," she said. "I haven't had time. Have you been to the roti shop?"

The movie was as wonderfully quirky as its title. Or maybe it was just Russian. A charming slacker with a background in biology gets a job teaching high school geography. He has a troubled homelife, an excessive (or Russian) love of alcohol, and an unruly class of students whom he treats with disdain that earns their respect (sort of). Those who ace his exam he takes on a field trip, down a river with treacherous rapids. I'll leave it at that, for those of you who might be seeing the film, though I will mention that the "geographer," as he's called, does get drunk. A few of the actresses looked a bit too beautiful to be convincing as everyday people in Perm - especially the one who plays the high school German teacher - but then again, I thought, this is Russia.
