I dreamed the other night that I was back as travel editor of the Sun-Sentinel, which had just hired Elizabeth Gilbert as editor-in-chief. People on news side were skeptical, but I was ecstatic. At our first meeting I mentioned the glowing reviews of her new novel (The New Yorker, the New York Times Book Review) but she feigned ignorance. Then I told her that I had spent my college summers working on the Frenchtown bridge. I quickly listed the other bridges under our purview - Milford, Riegelsville, the Phillipsburg free bridge, Belvedere - but she seemed unimpressed. Still, I was thrilled to have her on board. I was devastated when the alarm clock rang.
