Part of the interest in going to hear Tony Bennett is seeing who goes to hear Tony Bennett.

It was a decidedly older crowd at the Broward Center last night - it's always an older crowd at the Broward Center - but sprinkled among it were a number of people who hadn't turned 40.

Bennett's voice sounded as clear and strong as ever, with that occasional, signature gruffness. He talked a little between numbers, saying that he and Rosemary Clooney were the first American Idols (having won a talent contest). He mentioned, as we read in the program, that Bob Hope came up with his name. Before Hank Williams' Cold, Cold Heart he said that, originally, he felt he had no right to sing it, because it was a country song and he was "from the city."

He meant New York (Queens to be exact), though many people associate him with San Francisco. He sang an abridged version of the classic, as well as The Best is Yet to Come, a tough song to sing convincingly at the age of 86.

He sang a duet with his daughter (who opened the show). He continually highlighted his band: pianist, guitar player, bass player and drummer (who, like Bennett, wore a coat and tie). Toward the end of the evening he expressed his admiration for the venue. "We play a lot of beautiful halls all over the world," he said. "But there's nothing like this."

As he walked off the stage, to a standing ovation, it struck me that he is one of those ageless American entertainers (like Mel Brooks) who should be given dispensations from mortality.
