a reading in boca

09/25/12 08:45

Sunday after lunch I turned on C-Span 2 and watched my old Trenton Times colleague David Maraniss speak at the National Book Festival about his book on Obama, then I drove to Boca Raton to speak at the Spanish River Library about my article on the anti-Mafia.

Almost as soon as I entered the building a woman, a librarian, told me she missed me. "I read the Sun-Sentinel Travel section this morning," she said. "It took me about two and a half seconds." She mentioned that the last time we met I had recommended a book about the Great Plains.

"Great Plains by Ian Frazier," I told her. Yes, she said. She had read it and loved it and gave it to her husband, who had also loved it. It got passed around to family and friends.

Another, older woman stopped and said: "The last time I heard you speak you gave me the best restaurant recommendation. It was a place up in Venice."

"Snook Haven," I said.

"That's it. They have the best mahi-mahi sandwich."

"And they make their own potato chips," I said.

It was lovely being back amongst my readers.
