The benefit of having visitors is that you get to see your home through their eyes.
Last week a writer friend from New York came, and I took him to the Blue Anchor in Delray Beach. With an exterior shipped over from the East End of London - and doors that were reputedly opened, more than once, by a young Winston Churchill - it is South Florida's most authentic pub.
We ordered two cask ales and took seats at a table. The place that had always impressed me with its character now looked a little dowdy. Unlike in New York bars, where I often feel old, here I was one of the youngest drinkers. No one sat alone in a corner working on a laptop. The retired couples sipping their pints seemed a little too cheerful. And their clothing a bit too bright.
A man with a cane appeared - like an exclamation point - and limped past the bar followed patiently by his nurse.
