Saturday morning I joined a group of visiting travel writers for a tour of the new wing of the Museum of Discovery and Science. I was most interested in seeing the river otters, and they didn't disappoint, chasing each other over the rocks and playfully roughhousing in the pool. I liked that we stood inside looking through windows at their outdoor residence (beautifully appointed with a small waterfall).

After we had our fill of otters we were led to an exhibit on the Everglades. We took seats in an airboat that faced a curved wall. I slid in next to a woman from Berlin. We fastened our seatbelts. The airboat started to move, not forward, but from side to side. On the wall a film appeared that had been shot from a camera attached to the front of a real airboat. The motions of our stationary airboat faithfully followed the movement of the camera, so we had the sensation of actually going through the Everglades. Air was pumped in to mimic a breeze. It was extremely well-done.

When it was over I talked to the Berliner. I told her that you go to the Everglades in summer, it's hot, it's humid, there are tons of mosquitoes, nobody's there except for some Germans.

"I knew you were going to say that," she said.
