Monday I was listening to Joseph Cooper interview the CEO of Camillus House on "Topical Currents" and I was surprised to learn that the house is run by the Catholic Church. If you live in South Florida you frequently hear about Camillus House. But how many people, I now wondered, know that the Church is behind its aid to the poor and the heavy-laden?
With all the negative publicity the Catholic Church has received in recent years, you'd think it would be a little more savvy in tying its name to its good works - especially in a city that is getting a Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science and a Jorge M. Perez Art Museum of Miami.
On the home page of the Camillus House website there is no mention of the Church; you have to click "About Us" to read that the home was founded "in 1960 by the Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd at the request of the Archdiocese of Miami." Which makes it an exemplar of two of the Church's teachings: charity and humility.
