wrong holiday

Cafeina, a bar in Wynwood, is going all out for Memorial Day, advertising "fire works, fire dancers, and fire power." The $5 donation will go to the Armed Forces Foundation, and if you have a military ID you get in free.

I suppose a few jarhead hipsters might show up. But the few times I've been to Cafeina the crowd didn't look like the camouflage type. Our military gets a lot of respect these days, but this weekend's party strikes me as being more about commercialism than patriotism. Memorial Day is for remembering, through quiet reflection, the men and women killed in service to their country. It's become a day of picnics but not - at least until recently - fireworks. Not only are they celebratory (and this weekend is about the opposite of celebration), they mimic the missiles that caused many of the losses.

I wonder what Cafeina is planning for 9/11.
