I took my Honda Civic for a survey, and stood behind a man who gave his name as Quick.

"How do you spell that?" the woman conducting the survey asked.

"C-w-i-k," said the man.

"Swick," I said. "That's my name. Is yours Czech?" I asked the man.

"Polish," he said. I should have known.

He was originally from Warsaw, and had left in 1980, the year I got married in the city's Old Town. Now he lived in Tamarac.

We exchanged cards.
