After the concert Saturday, Hania and I took a stroll on Lincoln Road. Sitting at Pasha's, we tried to guess the language of the two couples at the next table.

"Danke schoene," said one of the women, and we looked at each other triumphantly: "German."

"No," the young woman said, having overheard us. "We were just saying the few German words we know. We're speaking Estonian." Hania told them she was Polish.

"Do you live here or are you visiting?" I asked.

"We live in Boca," said one of the men.

"Where are you from?" the other woman asked me.

"New Jersey," I said.

"But you don't have an accent." I thought of all the people in Broward who think of Miami as a foreign country. Then I explained that I once taught English in Poland using tapes from the British Institute. I added that we now live in Fort Lauderdale.

"So you're tourists," the man said. It was a good line, especially coming from a Boca Estonian.
