On my bike ride yesterday I stopped by Cafe Verdi and wished everyone a Merry Christmas, then I continued on to Inspired Interiors to check some facts in the story I'm writing on the Venetian Arts Society (pedaling to my last interview of the year).

Afterward I rode along the Himmarshee Canal, a mother Muscovy duck leading three chicks across the street, and came to The Towers, the home for the mentally disenfranchised. I had driven past the handsomely austere green building many times, and only when I started riding my bike, a couple years ago, did I notice the not-yet-elderly residents passing time on the front porch. One day I saw the man who walks Las Olas in sportcoat and tie, always alone and smoking a pipe. I had always wondered where he lived.

The home is perennially quiet, but yesterday, as I approached, an ungainly man in a white robe hurried toward the entrance gate. A small group - an older woman with two teenage boys and two preteen girls - stood on the sidewalk holding a plate of cookies. The man opened the gate and let them into the yard.

Later, I came upon the group walking back home with an empty plate. "Merry Christmas," the woman greeted me as I rode past.
