Passing Cinema Paradiso on my bike ride last night I saw a large crowd under the tent, a grill smoking on the street. The Fort Lauderdale Film Festival is in its first full week. I returned a few hours later for the second film of the evening - Au Revoir Taipei - which was shown without a meal. Though the characters spent a lot of time eating, and commenting on the food, which consisted primarily of delicious-looking dumplings and noodles. It made me want to go to Taipei.

It was the old story: girl leaves boy (for Paris), boy hangs out in bookstore reading French language books, boy strikes up friendship with girl who works in bookstore. "He was a smart boy," an elderly woman commented to me as we made our way down the steps. "Not many boys at his age are."
