down by the river

Yesterday evening, riding my bike along the New River, I noticed the flashing lights of a police car on the other side. A few policemen and women, one with a clipboard, stood talking in front of the River House condominium. A CSI Fort Lauderdale van stood a few feet away.

Waitresses and patrons of The Downtowner stood gazing across the water. "They just pulled a body out of the river," someone said. "Look at his arm sticking up," someone else added. The body was stretched out next to the gondola that takes tourists up and down the river.

"That's the second body in four days," a passer-by said. "Saturday they pulled one from the river just over there," and he pointed toward the 3rd Avenue bridge.

Shortly, a white sheet was draped over the body next to the hearse-black gondola.
