I finally broke down and subscribed to the Herald. It wasn't easy, partly because I spent 19 years working for its competitor. But more of a consideration was the fact that home delivery meant that I would no longer ride my bike out to the box on SW 9th Avenue to buy the paper every morning. There was something extremely satisfying about starting each day by taking an outmoded means of transportation to get a moribund source of information.

When I was growing up in Dallas, we were a Times Herald family. When they stopped publishing, it took years for us to subscribe to the Morning News. I felt like I’d lost a dear friend.
