long live nye's

After the reading a group of us went next door to Kramarczuk's for borscht and pierogies (followed by the home-baked pie) and then we walked across the street to Nye's Bar & Polonaise Room. I wrote about Nye's - and Ruth Adams and The World's Most Dangerous Polka Band- in A Way to See the World, and was delighted to return to it almost 20 years later. Ruth Adams died about a year ago, I was told, but the band still played - three serious-faced men in late middle age - and the crowd still danced (the more inebriated members of it at least). I pulled on a bottle of Zywiec, amazed once again at the mix of young and old (in Miami nothing fusty would ever be viewed as hip) and saddened by the news, confirmed by the hostess on the way in, that Nye's will soon be closing its doors. Apparently, in a very South Florida scenario, a developer is moving in.
