Yesterday, after supper on the balcony, Hania and I laced up our sneakers for our evening walk around the island (the first this year in daylight).
Turning from the north canal we saw a man looking into the river. "There's a manatee," he said. We followed the telltale circles on the water, and soon a large gray snout broke the surface. It immediately returned under water, but so close to the river bank that we could see it clearly - a large graceful sack with a piece of its tale missing (no doubt from a collision with a boat). Looking closer, we saw a baby swimming on its left.
Continuing our walk we turned onto the south canal and saw straight ahead of us - having just cleared the trees - a white full moon.
