E-mail today from a magazine to which I'd submitted an essay:
"We appreciate your interest in our journal and look forward to reading your work. We try to get to every submission as quickly as possible, but we currently have a backlog, and it may take us a while to respond.
"That being said, we thought you might be looking for some reading material to pass the time, and we would like to offer you the following subscription deal."
Clearly, times are tough all over. I'm thinking of writing back and telling them that if they run my essay I'll become a subscriber.
